I read an interesting article on the Urban Garden Solutions website that described some reasons as to why growing and eating your own food in the US is becoming almost a must.
The article describes, “A new study just released found that Hispanics living in Florida have a 40 percent higher chance of getting cancer than their counterparts that lived in their native countries. The conclusion of this study suggests that the lifestyle and environmental changes (foods they eat being one of them) are probably the culprit” (Urban Garden Solutions). Having a sister-in-law from Mexico and having lived with her for almost 3 years I can relate to the idea that the way cultures differ in regards to eating habits is large. A lot of the foods she would make would be fresh. She would make fresh tortillas, fresh salsa and so on. The unfortunate part is that we did not have a garden. So even though we were eating a lot healthier we still were not eating our own fresh vegetables.

Now, I’m not an expert when it comes to whether or not garden grown vegetables will prevent cancer, but the items listed in this article are pretty much common knowledge to anyone who has taken any type of a nutrition class or watched any kind of a special on TV about it. Regardless of the chemicals used to grow and/or process foods, I personally believe that eating right from the garden just tastes better and is more rewarding. This past weekend we had fresh potatoes and carrots right from the garden with our pork ribs. I think they were lightly seasoned and had a hint of butter or oil on them. They were delicious. Potatoes and carrots are so much more sweet when they are right out of the garden than if I buy them at the store.
I thought this was an interesting reminder to everyone. If you have the ability to grow some of your own foods, not only will you save money, but things will taste better, and who knows, you could quite possibly be preventing a deadly disease that seems to be running rampant through our society.
